Mowgli - Guitar

Terry - Drums
Our history is as concise as it can be in the booklet of our “Try and You Might…” Anthology CD, but for anyone that doesn’t have that, NO CHOICE came about after myself and Martin were doing our usual jamming on the top floor of an old malthouse in Cardiff, me on drums and vocals, and Martin on guitar and vocals. We were making enough noise for three nosey scallies to stick their heads around the door and ask “what we were up to”. Terry said he needed drums, Martin said we needed a drummer, Svend could play bass, they knew I could shout, and so, apparently, could Cid. After a few practices we came up with the name NO CHOICE, mainly because of the frustration we all felt and sheer will to do something and vent this anger from within out into the world. Every government had let the working class down and we had “No Choice” but to fight back, albeit with a plectrum, but hey, it was a start. After giving our first demo to Chaos of CHAOS UK, Simon from Riot City Records offered to put out a single - “Sadist Dream” with “Nuclear Disaster” and “Cream of The Crop” on the B-side. We did a few gigs and split up before we really gave it a go. Line-up two consisted of Ada - bass, Jake - drums, Gagz - vocals and Martin - guitar / vocals.
With this line-up we enjoyed many good gigs supporting good causes, most important to us at that time being the Miners’ strike in the 80’s and anti-apartheid movement gigs.We also recorded the six track demo “Question Time”, although I filled in on bass as Ada couldn’t make it. Jake then moved away and Steve took over drums, Martin moved onto bass and Ada onto guitar, and again we were up and running. Terry came back as Steve departed and we went gigging for a while until the fun went - though we never fell out and remained good friends. After playing soccer and enjoying our kids growing up, myself, Terry and Ada roped in Tim, an ex-ICONS OF FILTH bassist, and gigged under the name SAND. We recorded a 7 track, titled “A Tape of Two Halves” and a self funded 7” EP, “Lever, Neurosis, Hysteria” with the tracks “To Me You’re That Important”, “72 - 92” and “All This And More”, but we didn’t really push it at all, and still have copies to give away! We played a few gigs, and again took our feet off the gas and let it chill for a bit. But old punks never die, and I’m glad to say that we got the bug again - back to basics, and recording under the name NO CHOICE once more. We kicked into gear properly when Paul replied to an advert in Spillers (local independent record shop) that I had put in there for a bass player, and as soon as he turned up he was just an amazing bass player, and he had ideas as well. He was into the same sort of stuff we were, and he’s a really infectious character. It was great having him on board, and together with Terry’s abilities on the drums to play different styles Terry just loved it - having a bassist he could really work with.
Interestingly enough, the bloke who phoned up the day before we were about to give Paul his first practice was Kaney, asking to play bass, even though he’s a guitarist. I told him that we had to give Paul a chance first, and he turned out to be a great bass player, so I had to tell him no! He was a bit gutted, but I did tell him that if we needed another guitarist we might give him a call - and that’s how Kaney joining on second guitar came about. It was after we supported HOT WATER MUSIC, and they sounded so brilliant we saw the benefit of having two guitarists, plus Ada always wanted to work with another guitarist, as he had lots of ideas for two different guitar parts on some of our songs, which he could only really achieve in a studio. So we called Kaney up and he’s just an amazing guitarist. It’s worked out really well - Taken from Fracture #25. *Since then, Kaney left and has been replaced by Mowgli, and they should have a new album out on Mortarhate called "Vive Le Internationalist!" soon.
