Recorded in the same session as the four tracks for their split 7" with OFF WITH THEIR HEADS on No Idea Records, "Staring Down The Barrel" is easily some of FOUR LETTER WORD's best work to date. Kicking off with the highly melodic, vocally multi layered "A Cautionary Tale", the first thing you'll notice is the return of original guitarist Jon Butler, giving the band more of a "Zero Visibility" era feel in both the song writing and guitar sound. This is no bad thing, especially when "To Be Confirmed" kicks in, sounding almost like a cross between BAD RELIGION and POISON IDEA. If you think guitar solo's were 'yesterday's news' then think again! Combined with the scathing, no bullshit lyrics about the modern day gig promotion game ("Armed to the teeth with his business plan, on the demographics of the music fan"), this has to be one of FOUR LETTER WORD's most pissed off songs of all time. Side B kicks things off with another brand new track, "Bible Black", a super catchy, anthemic, punchy and just a straight up, solid punk rock song complete with yet more unique, stunning guitar work from Jon. Finally, "Staring Down The Barrel" ends on a classic note, with a re-working of the 1995 classic "Rich White Ghetto" updated to be relevant to the 2007 punk scene. The new name "Punk Rock Ghetto" will make sense once you read the lyrics. There's a few updated twists musically as well, making it a totally worthwhile idea all round. "Staring Down The Barrel" is an essential companion piece to the previously mentioned split with OFF WITH THEIR HEADS, and I can't emphasise enough what a great record this really is. A definite return to form for FOR LETTER WORD. Um, did I tell you to buy it already?
